Planning your bathroom remodeling

Separate the finishes from the systems.

Replacing a vanity is a different scope from moving the sink. Lighting, storage, circulation and shower construction should be defined alongside the finishes so the estimate describes the work behind the tile as well as the room you will see.

Layout

Fixture positions, door clearance, storage and intended accessibility needs.

Wet areas & systems

Shower or tub scope, waterproofing, ventilation, plumbing and lighting.

Selections & access

Tile, fixtures and vanity dimensions, plus bathroom availability during construction.

Questions & answers

Bathroom remodeling: your questions.

Should I keep the existing bathroom layout?
Keep it if the layout already supports the way the room is used. If a fixture blocks circulation or storage cannot work, compare a revised layout and its associated plumbing, electrical and wall work.
Does new tile solve a shower problem?
Not necessarily. Describe the symptom and have the underlying condition assessed before deciding on finishes. The waterproofing and substrate scope should be explicit in the proposal.
What changes the bathroom construction schedule?
Scope, inspections, concealed conditions and availability of selected fixtures and tile all affect the sequence. Confirm which materials must be ready before the room is taken out of service.
Can we keep another bathroom in use?
Discuss access and shared systems before work starts. A second bathroom is useful only if it remains reachable and its water, power and drainage are not disrupted by the same phase of work.
